Hales Owen Abbey
Welcome to the Hales Owen Abbey website provided by the Hales Owen Abbey Trust.
The objective of this site is to inform both the casual and more serious visitor of the history of this amazing mediaeval abbey.
Many will be unaware of the existence of the Abbey although it has been Scheduled as an Ancient Monument of National Importance since 1915.
The Abbey was founded in 1215 and was dedicated to the Premonstratension Order. It was a seat of regional authority for over three hundred years and thereafter, following dissolution in 1538, has lain "cocooned" and protected, but relatively unknown, amidst the workings of a farm.
That farm is half a mile southeast of Hales Owen town centre and a mile from junction three of the M5 motorway. Boundary changes over the centuries have meant that it has officially been in Shropshire, Worcestershire and, since 1974, in the West Midlands.
